Challenge Reminder

By Timothy R Butler | Posted at 5:16 AM

There are four questions presently open in the latest challenge (7.4, 7.5, 8.1, 8.3) . If you're looking to size up your position, don't miss this great opportunity. I'm also thinking about reworking the rules so that the threshold for a prize is lower. Sound good or do y'all like it the way it is?

Also, don't forget that you have one day left to guess the right photo over here. Everyone with the right answer will get 30 pts.

Re: Challenge Reminder

The challenges are nice, but they do need a lot of research, especially since (I think you said) we can’t use google :) Then again, they’re supposed to be challenges, not sitting ducks :)

True, although, you know perhaps what I should do is make it so that after one week they count for half their normal points, but can be Googled. Of course, on quotes, Kevin was quite wise in using Amazon. :-)

Or perhaps I’m getting too obscure. The AT&T one is almost impossible unless one knows what I was thinking.

Re: Challenge Reminder

Hey, I am not using anything!

I can use other search engines and the like?

Dang.

Re: Challenge Reminder

Christopher, you can use non-web search engines. That is, you can’t use A9, but you can search Amazon’s books, Wikipedia, or some other similar sites (I also permit searching Google so long as you restrict your search to “site:asisaid.com” so that the only results are on this site).

Re: Challenge Reminder

I did some searching through Amazon on quotes where I had some idea or basis to start looking through books. On a tech question where Tim mentioned it had been reported on recently on a tech website, I visited tech websites I could think of and searched through their recent articles. I have a few catholic church resources that are good for looking up church history, as well as links to most other major denominations for info on them. I spent some time on the US government archives site looking up the signatures on the constitution, but didn’t find the answer to that question. For the AT&T question, I went to business news websites looking for new articles on the ATT/SBC merger and old articles on the TCI buyout. Searching site:asisaid.com hasn’t generated much real help, though it did give me a couple clues to start looking through books on Amazon.

The key has been in thinking what Tim’s resources are and where he might be getting the information he’s asking about. It also helps that we have some similar music tastes and a few of the same book titles on our shelves.

Mostly, I really enjoy investigative work and have used these challenges the way I use the times crossword puzzle. It’s a nice mental challenge to take a break from everything else while getting some exercise for my block.

Re: Challenge Reminder

I need to look up the constitution answer, I fear I have forgotten it, although I remember where I jotted it down when I heard that tidbit. I suspect I should provide the answers for that one and the TCI buyout.

All I can say is your good at detective work. What have you concluded are my resources?

The similar music tastes and, more specifically, timing of those tastes, has been uncanny. :-) At any rate, I’m glad you enjoy it. I’ve enjoyed stretching my brain for good questions, as well. I guess it is sort of like a crossword puzzle. I do need to think of some slightly easier ones though, I think I’ve made some of them too hard.
