Apple to Go Intel?
By Timothy R Butler | Posted at 6:08 AM
News.com is usually a pretty respectable news source, so when they report as fact that Apple is switching to Intel, I have to pay somewhat more attention than I usually give to such claims. But, Apple to Intel chipsets? That makes little sense, since no legacy software would run (at least decently), the systems would be slower, AltiVec would no longer be available, etc., etc. If this is true, I predict Apple will not survive the switch. For now, I am presuming the report will be proven false during Job's WWDC keynote on Monday.

I have read this rumor from many sites. I am hoping that it is wrong for the exact reason that you list. If this is the case, will software developers make two Mac versions of software for future developments? What a mess this would create and it could tick off a bunch of very loyal Apple users.

I’m glad you blogged about this story because it makes no sense to me either.
Take away the PPC architecture and what do you have? A x86 box running BSD with an Apple’s Gui? Does Apple really want to go head to head with all the Win/intel/PC OEMs?
A funny note, you should read some of the comments (on both sides) at Cnet/News.com. Too funny. My favorite has to be that MS stole the idea of a Gui from Apple. Ummmm, that might be true but, Steve Jobs himself said he got it from someone else(Xerox?? can’t remember) and clearly stated that in the Cringely Show.
Aaaah the pc industry, no where can you find a larger collection of folks with selective memory. I’m sure somewhere in this world someone believes Linus created the first ever os kernel.
