Macmini Co-location

Yeah, you want one… you know you want a co-located Mac mini server for only $22.95 a month (plus the cost of the system). And as I noted when this was posted to a list I'm on, that is the only reason you'd actually sign up for this service: because you'd like to say you have a co-lo Mac mini.

Don't get me wrong, it is a neat idea — and you saw it first on asisaid — but with a paltry 20 GB bandwidth allowance, that skyrockets in cost if you up it to enough to keep a dedicated server busy, and 24×7 onsite monitoring only available after you give up an additional twenty greenbacks, you'll quickly end up in budget dedicated territory minus all the perks of budget dedicated machines.

Still, it's a neat idea if you want to play around with having your own server, but can't justify the price of something a bit more expensive. I actually like the idea, I just hope someone doesn't think they are getting a bargain when they end up having to add all the upgrades later on.

Personally, I think rather than sending a new Mac mini to this place, I'd keep it at home and make it a media PC. Or a file server. Or a kitchen PC. What would you do with a Mac mini?

Re: Macmini Co-location

I would type school papers and reply to Tim’s witty questions at asisaid!

Re: Macmini Co-location

I’d trade it for a hot PC from Fry’s — you know the one ;-) — and a monitor to match.

kevin: Thanks! :-)

Ed: No fair. :-P Anyway, it’d make a very nice LinuxPPC system.

Re: Macmini Co-location

Ummm. I would hug it.

Then I would try to find a way to make it a DVR (I’m sure there is software out there to do it). I would also store all music and picture files there. I would then stream all my music to my iMac and PC (I think you can do that as long as you are using iTunes) using AirTunes. It would be my digital hub and I wouldn’t buy a monitor for it, I would just use the TV as a monitor and I would have to have Bluetooth installed so I could use the wireless keyboard and mouse.

Other than that, I haven’t really thought about it all…

Ooops! I forgot.

kevin, come now, who has the witty questions. Tackily snickers at his own cleverness, or lameness. Not sure which.

Tim, you probably know this, but after I submit a comment, I get the comment and then a bunch of html and cookies settings. No nice link to go back asIsaid.

Re: Macmini Co-location

I would sit it under my 20 inch iMac and use it as more of a storage device, much like Christophers idea only its not…

Yeah, Tim — Your post-submit page is missing the paragraph tags. As soon as I added them to a copy, the page turned into genuine HTML.

Re: Macmini Co-location

I’m stumped as to why the cookies and stuff are showing. They don’t show up on the test copy of SAFARI where I do development, only here. I need to track that down. As far as the paragraph tags, I’ve never gotten in habit of using them… I know I should, but that shouldn’t be the problem, since I never use paragraph tags.
