The Blogroll

By Timothy R Butler | Posted at 11:05 PM

Here are some blogroll items I've been meaning to do and/or ask about:

asisaid Blogroll now with a personal touch: I decided to give my blogroll a more personal touch by switching from blog names to the names of the bloggers. Here's how I did it: if you publish your whole name on your site, your whole name went on the roll. If you publish only your first name and/or I am aware that you don't really want your whole name tied to your blog, I only included your first name or first name plus last initial. If I made a mistake, let me know. If I didn't put down your last name and you don't care if I do, comment below; if I did put down your last name and you don't want it listed, let me know that too. Thanks!

I also added a link to a blog by a friend of mine who just joined the blogosphere. Go take a look at Deep Thought and give Chris a hardy welcome! It looks like it should be an interesting blog for those interested in Macs (Chris has contributed a couple commentaries to OfB.biz, including one I mentioned the other day).

please ping weblogs.com: I'd like to ask a favor, if I may. If you have a blog, please “ping” (your weblog software should support XML-RPC pinging) weblogs.com and/or blogrolling.com when you update your blog. If your blog is at the bottom of my blogroll, that probably means you never ping and therefore blogrolling never moves your name to the top of my list. If you ping, then I'll know when you've updated and that means I (and others using BlogRolling's or Wordpress's ability to denote updated blogs) can enjoy your new posts.

blogrolling asisaid.com: In a similar vein, if you are blogrolling me, remember that the address I ping is http://asisaid.com/journal/, not just http://asisaid.com/ or http://www.asisaid.com/ or any other variation. Therefore, if you are wondering why update notification never works on my blog, you now know why. It is rather unfortunate that the XML-RPC ping spec does not provide a convenient way to provide alternate URL's (as far as I know), but since it doesn't, the address must be exactly the correct one for update notification to work.

RE: The Blogroll

Just a word of caution - pinging weblogs.com sometimes seems to malfunction if you don’t use a standard blogware of some kind, even if you use the ping form. I think WIT has had problems with that, and my site frequently doesn’t show as updated on sites where the owner uses weblogs.com. Unfortunately I’m not sure where the problem is.

RE: The Blogroll

Flip — I didn’t think you had a site. I need to pay better attention. :-)

I find rpc.blogrolling.com seems to be a bit more reliable, albeit a bit more limited in use.

RE: The Blogroll

It’s more of a leisure project and an excuse to learn about webstuff, really, but thanks for listing me :)

RE: The Blogroll

I’m fine with it. Thanks for just using the W.

Flip, something that Tim just said got me thinking… (I suppose I should do this on my own blog but I’m here)

I have linked the following address: http://www.heresomewhere.com/stuff/stuff.php

Is that the one that you are pinging?

RE: The Blogroll

It’s Josiah Ritchie. You made the common mistake of missing the ‘T’. You did get the ‘ie’ part right instead of ‘y’ which I appreciate and you didn’t spell my last name ‘Joshua’ or ‘Joseph’ or ‘yosi-ah’ or any of the other ways it gets misspelled. You made the mistake I understand because the ‘t’ in Ritchie is nearly silent. Neat idea, by the way.

Who is the blank dot at the end of the roll?

RE: The Blogroll

Christopher, yes, that’s the URL. I pinged both weblogs and blogrolling 10 minutes ago, but I don’t see any changes neither here on asisaid or WIT. On TTB it works perfectly, as usual. Since it’s a manual ping, I don’t see how it could be caused by my site, unless the “updated” validation they do malfunctions because of the time zone or similar. Or if it’s because the name of the site I submit doesn’t compare to the one you have listed. I really have no idea :(

RE: The Blogroll

You can use my last name if you want to. Also your blogroll dose not show my blog as updated very often.

RE: The Blogroll

Josiah: Oops, sorry, I was going to fast. Thanks (re: the idea), I thought it seemed a bit nicer than a bunch of blog names, in a way — it connects the comments with the blogs a bit more. The dot is Mr. Dev Null. Seriously, its a malfunction in the way my caching script reconstructs the blogroll. I’ve been meaning to fix it for months… it doesn’t show up in Safari.

Flip: My blogroll is cached, so it might take a bit longer. It is updated at the moment.

Michael: I will add it. Regarding updating, are you pinging both weblogs and blogrolling? I’ve noticed that WordPress blogs don’t always seem to appear to be updated for some reason…

RE: The Blogroll

Oh, I forgot, Christopher: you are welcome. I remembered that you had quit using it on your last name on your blog awhile back, so I figured it wouldn’t be of much help if I included it. :-)

RE: The Blogroll

Tim: I really concur and enjoy seeing our names in the blogroll. Funny thing is, I’ve updated my blog about one or two hours ago and still looks like it’s not updated in your roll.

Blessings,

Eduardo
