World English Bible

A friend of mine did not know where he could find WEB on the web, so I here are a few good sources for him:

  • World English Bible Official Site — This is where you'll find the latest version of WEB. Most of WEB has now been human edited to bring it up to the latest English, and the rest has been edited by computer. You can read it online here.
  • CrossWire Bible Society — You can download the free SWORD Bible Study tool for your type of computer and enjoy the WEB and dozens of other translations, commentaries and resources here. I personally use MacSword, but I can attest to the quality of the Windows and GNU/Linux SWORD variants as well. I have 91 different modules in MacSword in three languages (English, Greek and Hebrew — but those aren't the only ones available)! SWORD (including WEB) also is available online from this site, thanks to the cooperation of CrossWire, the American BIble Society and the Society for Bible Literature.

What's your favorite translation? Do you access it online? On your computer (offline)? In print? I switch between each of these, but I still use a paper Bible the most, I suppose. Leave your thoughts in the comments.

RE: World English Bible

I use e-Sword when writing papers for the copy/paste ability. I also use it when I want to search the bible for a word. I have a bible reader on my smartphone that fills in when I find myself wanting to find a verse and not carrying a bible. For general reading and study, I stick with bound paper.

I have 3 favorite translations, each with their own strengths:

NASB - primary study bible NLT - primary reading bible MSG - secondary reading bible

For quick searching, I use Sword and the KJV. For just about everything else, I use NKJV. I still have a sentimental attachment to a book with paper pages. The why of that translation is too well covered in my old blog posts and articles on my Bible site.

RE: World English Bible

I can’t say I’ve ever looked into e-Sword, Kevin. I should. Translation wise, I didn’t mention the ones I like:

NIV - primary study Bible (paper). WEB - primary study Bible (electronic). NLT - primary reading Bible. CEV - secondary reading Bible.

I also like the KJV on stuff I’m use to it on — such as the Psalms. It is the most beautiful. At other times, I’ve used the NKJV, like Ed, but I’ve grown use to the MKJV as my KJV-like Bible of choice since its updater (not really translator, obviously) lets Sword and several other projects use it. Green did a good job with it.
