QOTW #16: Did You Watch the Debates?

By Timothy R Butler | Posted at 1:07 AM

The Question of the Week meme returns. Feel free to post your answer or a link to your answer in the comments.

Did you watch the debates? What did you think of them? Who won?

Yes, I did (as readers of asisaid know). I thought overall that President Bush could have done a better job of marginalizing John Kerry — given his strong position on the issues. Unfortunately, that did not happen, although those willing to examine the issues will see that the President has a far more thoughtful approach than Sen. Kerry. It is too bad that the average American bases his or her opinions on things such as whether they scowl at annoying remarks of their opponent or not, and instead based it on who had the best substance (would it not be better if they did scowl and show their real emotions?).

Overall, I'd say Bush won because I think he most definitely won debate two and — in my opinion — won in debate three.

No I did not. The debates merely show us which candidate is a good debater. It does not cover each candidate’s voting history on the topics to prove honesty. It does not guarantee any of the words spoken to be true. It does not include all parties running for the position of president. It doesn’t even cover all the topics given how each debate has pre-decided and limited topics.

I agree with Tim in the respect that alot of people will use these debates as their only form of “research” before voting. Each debate is / was 90min??? If so then these folks are using a mere 4hrs and 30mins to decide the next 4years. If that’s the case then I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kerry elected.

I did not — TV, feh! I agree with Mark and will add that nothing of importance was discussed, from the reviews I read. Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, Bonesmen are all that we see. Socialist Party A or B, choose your flavor. Sorry, actual liberty is not being offered.

I watched the second debate mostly because it was in St. Louis. I listened to the first via a free download from iTunes. I have downloaded the third to listen to.

You are right Mark. Although I find it interesting since it is essentially the only chance to see the two major party entries to the race interact with each other. I think — for the most part — anyone going into the debates planning to use them as their “research” is pitiful.

Ed: I never would have guessed! ;-)

Christopher: I looked at those on iTunes but never got back to download them. I should do that. It is rather interesting to compare the video version of the debate with the audio — it is amazing how different it can be.
