Lapbert Has Problems
By Timothy R Butler | Posted at 1:27 AM
My trusty old Dell laptop (“Lapbert”) seems to have problems. It's PC Card network card can't establish a connection. Worse, I didn't realize that until I entered all this month's invoicing data so that it would be ready for printing and e-mailing. So I now have to redo it all. By hand. Soon.
After I get done with that, I need to figure out how serious the problem is. I hope it isn't too bad.

Were you able to save the information to a file? Could you get it to a floppy? If you had to resort to re-enter the data manually somewhere else, it must be really serious.
Another question: Did you try changing the NIC ?
RE: Lapbert Has Problems
Hi Eduardo - Well, I could probably manually export the individual invoices to floppy, although part of this program’s charm (actually most of it) is that it can e-mail invoices for you (it is SQL-Ledger). I could also try exporting the database out of PostgreSQL. I had some trouble with that before, however, since I’m using an older version of PostgreSQL for this program (I’m running the version that came with Mandrake Linux 9.0, which I managed to reinstall after I upgraded to 9.1 last year on the laptop). I’ll have to look into that.
I’m not sure how easy it will be to reinstall SQL-Ledger either. It took me quite a few hours to get it to work right the first time around. sigh In the mean time, I might type up the rest of the invoices again so I can get them sent off.
I didn’t try changing the NIC, but I might head over to an electronics store in the next few days and get one to try. I did verify that the cable and router were working OK — I hooked the same cable to my PowerBook and it worked just fine.

Keep posting this sort of stuff. I have been asked to play at computer service tech for my area of the county. It’s almost an odd extension of our work at Ofb.biz. Migration to Linux is what I will push, and the biggest single hassle I can see is Quickbooks. There seems to be no free Linux app that can import from it. Might make a good project for Ofb.biz, but I have such a long way to go learning it. Any of our associates able to cover it?
RE: Lapbert Has Problems
Perhaps the whole issue could be solved just by changing the NIC. Hope it works
