QOTW #4: Kodak Moments
It is a bit late (and will probably have to cover next week too, since hopefully I will be in Branson this upcoming Monday), but here is the question of the week. Feel free to respond here or use this as a meme on your blog (please post a link to your entry).
Do you have a digital camera? Do you use it in lieu of a traditional film camera? How many pictures have you taken with it? Do you stick to the highest possible quality or do you lower the quality to get in more pictures?
Yes, I do. I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-S72, which is a 3.2 megapixel camera with manual adjustments (shutter speed and aperture). It has, for all intents and purposes, replaced my little Kodak APS (Advanced Photo System) camera, not only because it has more features, but also because I can take as many pictures as I want without development costs.
I'm not sure how many pictures I've taken, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is over 5,000 in the last two years. On a trip, I might take 700 or more photos, only stopping when I fill up my four 128 meg memory cards (obviously, yes, that means I don't take pictures at the full rated quality most of the time… I usually opt for 1280×1024 res.). That leads me to my one complaint with the camera. Sony seems to have decided that Memory Sticks have hit the end of the road and the company is now only creating cards larger than 128 megs in the new Memory Stick Pro format, which is incompatible with older Sony cameras. This means I can't get a 256 or 512 meg stick that would truly allow for convenient use of the 3 megapixel CCD.
Overall, though, I love the camera. Only Sony's prosumer V series cameras come in the same heavy duty, SLR sized form factors now, so I'm glad I got mine while they offered it. I like the little compact cameras, but there is something satisfying about holding a decent sized camera that fits one's hands just right. The other big advantage to the full sized camera is that I can screw on an adapter to fit on standard 52” lenses, etc., you can't do that with Sony's heir to the S72.

Yes, I got one, and I’m cheap! Olympus D-390, the included 16MB card, most pictures at 640x640 — I take only a few right now, because I am not traveling. That’s when I take most of my photos: hiking areas I won’t see again, vistas that are rare, etc. I still have my old Mamiya-Sekor 35mm SLR, but haven’t used it since hiking in Europe. The new one is more of a convenient way of getting shots for online posting, etc. It seldom leaves the house, but then so do I.

I have an Olympus C-4000. I haven’t taken a single pic with my Pentax SLR (film camera) since I bought the Olympus. I haven’t taken as many shots as you, but I’ve taken quite a few.
Resolution depends on what I’m doing and how far I am from my laptop. I take the highest resolution I can, based on the number of shots I need and when I can upload.
I’m thinking of buying a 2nd digicam. The Olympus is a great machine, but it’s too big. When I’m staging shots and using the tripod, I love it. I don’t just carry it around for the random shot, though. I’m thinking of picking up an older 2MP camera (cheap!) for quick little snaps.
RE: QOTW #4: Kodak Moments
Wow… two Olympus owners in a row.
Kevin: I’m not sure if you are interested, but Target has a very cool little 2 MP Sony cybershot that is really small for $139, IIRC (clearance). I didn’t see it out of the case, but it was quite tiny.
For random shots, I use my cell phone. It doesn’t do a great job, but its 640x480 pictures are really pretty good. Unlike a camera, I almost never forget my cell phone too. For $99, it was a steal… since it also has SymbianOS on it and can sync with my Mac via Bluetooth.

Lets see Canon A70. Have been as of late but we still use the other camera. Not really fair having me answer this given I have a 1month old but I would say well over 200 in just the last month
I’ve been using the middle setting out of three. Seems to create a good res for the web yet not to big to bog down dial ups.

I use a rather old Sony Macawhatever. It is one that takes the 3 1/2 floppy. I use it exclusively for school. Those pictures are posted on the internet so I am quite content with my low resolution, smaller file size!
RE: QOTW #4: Kodak Moments
Mark, that is pretty good in a month!
Christopher, I always liked those floppy disk cameras… it was a cool concept! Have you tried it with the memory stick adapter that supposedly allows it to write to memory sticks?
RE: QOTW #4: Kodak Moments
Canon PowerShot A80, almost alway stick with the high-quality. My wife does most of the photography and she gravitates between her SLR and the A80 pretty regular. When she wants real quality she still picks up the SLR, but for journalistic moments its the A80.
