The referer script is finished. Only it isn't just a referer script anymore. And to represent that, it has become heir of the name that I gave my first published CGI script. Count+Stat is hopelessly outdated these days, so bring on Count+Stat Remote!
Here's what this puppy can do:- Show a list of referers.
- Adjustable minimum to display (one referral, two referrals, etc.)
- Adjust whether the information just comes out as one referer per line or as a nicely formatted HTML list.
- Choose whether to show non-referred hits in the list or not.
- Hide referrals coming from your own page and/or site.
- Keep a separate count and list of referrals for each page or unify all of the information on a per-domain basis.
- Show a text counter of hits and visits.
- Show both at once.
- Be an almost invisible little box that just tracks the stats for your private perusal.
- Turn all of this information into an interesting statistics page.
- And even more… This is the kitchen sink of referer list tools.
Thoughts? Problems? Successes? Please post 'em below. If you have suggestions for improvements I will try to implement them if they are feasible within my time limitations.![]()
Update: I forgot to mention that you can find a sample of the script in action at the bottom of my blog pages. I have it set to show two days worth of referrals formatted as a list, without self-referrals, with non-referred hits, a two-referral minimum and the counter.
I have implemented this on WIT?!?!? I'll let you know what I think.
I had a referrer script once upon a time, but got rid of it because it gave inflated numbers of referrals. What do I do to get yours?
Douglas, click the Count+Stat Remote link in the above entry. All the directions.
I'm not for sure if it is working. I says I have only one hit and one visit. I have been there on more than one computer. Or maybe I am not a popular as I thought:(
I can't wait for it to be installed on my blog.
I removed the referer system from my blog because I was getting numerious hits from adult sites and I did not want them showing on my blog.
Can I change the settings so that it gives the name of the site instead of the URL?
It has been working well until just recently, when a message box appears with a red circle with an x in it saying “A Runtime error has occurred. Do you wish to debug? Line: 1 Error: Unterminated String Constant. Help!
Hmm no visitors now. Whaz up?
Hi Christopher and Douglas: I'm a bit puzzled at the problem. I will look into it and see what I can do. Sorry I haven't been around to solve it sooner.
As far as multiple computers, it tracks by IP address, so if it is on the same connection (i.e. DSL, etc.) it won't count as multiple visits.![]()
Christopher: it looks like your site doesn't have the code for the referer portion of the script… just the statistics. If you add the first bit of code it will start working.
Hi Douglas, I just looked on your site and things look good. When I clicked over it showed this page as a referer too. Are you still having problems?
I took it down. I will put it back up.
Douglas: on the name issue, the program will provide a normal name for the link if it is able to contact the server and retrieve it. Let me know if you have any more problems with that…
Tim: I have an idea. I haven't installed the script, but what I think would be really cool is if you could exclude some domains from the list displayed, in case of referrer spam. Since presumably the list of referrers for each site is held on your server, you could quite easily write something in the bit that returns the referrers that filters out known spamming domains…
Timothy. My stats seemed to have reset myself. Does it do that when it gets over 1,000?
