What Technology Do You Really Want?

By Timothy R Butler | Posted at 11:00 PM

I'm just curious, dear readers, what piece of technology would you get right now if you had, say, $4,000, and could spend it on just one item? That's a tough question, isn't it?

Well, I think I know what I'd go for. It'd run this and this very nicely. It'd also complement my Dell Dimension 4550 running Mandrake Linux quite nicely (silver and black always look nice together — as the Logitech MX700 mouse demonstrates :-)).

So, how 'bout you?

I’d probably get one of the latest 15 inch powerbooks…complete with DVD burner…and an ipod with the change.

Those are pretty nice too. At 39 lbs., my pick wouldn’t be nearly as portable. ;-)

$4,000 would be a nice down payment on an IBM E-Server or enough to buy a small starter server. I’ve had my eyes on the IBM entry server running Unix starting at $5,095.

I just built a Mac G5 for $7,314.95. I went a little over budget.

OK so I’m a luddite (a total and utter tech egg-head in fact). $4000 US? Translated to Aussie dollars…a laptop (not too fancy), a digital camera, a scanner, a small CD sound system to replace my ghetto blaster….which should leave me enough money left over to sponsor three kids for a year. When’s the cheque in the mail, Tim? :-P

Christopher — yikes! Whatcha put in that G5? The fancy shmancy review units Apple has been sending magazines such as ComputerWorld only go up to about $4,300…. Well, I guess you can add $3,314.95 on to the “free” $4,000.

Saint — “the check is in the mail.” ;-)
