Mr. Former President: Thanks.

Well, I never expected to say it, but former President Clinton has just earned a hearty thanks in my books. According to CNN, Clinton called in to honor Larry King's guest — Bob Dole — on Dole's 80th birthday. During the conversation, he talked about the current controversy concerning President Bush's State of the Union address. Of course we know what he said. He talked about how terrible the president was and what a bad job he'd done — err, wait a second, actually that wasn't anything like what he said.

In part, Clinton stated, “I thought the White House did the right thing in just saying 'we probably shouldn't have said that.'” He continued, “You know, everybody makes mistakes when they are president. I mean, you can't make as many calls as you have to make without messing up once in a while. The thing we ought to be focused on is what is the right thing to do now. That's what I think.”

Unlike other democrats that have seen this as an ideal way to hurt the Bush Administration's chances for reelection, most notably Gov. Howard Dean (D-Vt.), Clinton urged that it was time to move on. He urged that “People can quarrel with whether we should have more troops in Afghanistan or internationalize Iraq or whatever, but it is incontestable that on the day I left office, there were unaccounted for stocks of biological and chemical weapons.”

Of course, not everyone of the former President's staff agreed. You can read the full report here.

In all, I'm left a bit speechless by this. Everyone knows Clinton was critical of the administration's moves toward Iraq earlier this year. Yet has shown a very commendable view at a time when he could have easily been a strong voice for the Dem's best hope at hurting the administration thus far. I can't believe I'm writing this, but I'm impressed with former President Clinton's forward focus on the issue.

For that, I thank you Mr. Clinton. Let's hope that this is the action people try to copy from you.

Well, there is a lot behind this of course. I assume Clinton is thinking that the dems are goign to get themselves caught in a no win situation again. The American people are also sick of hearing about this Uranium bit. Not just righties, but lefties are sick of it. So dems are beginning to look bad to more people because of it. Also what happens when we find evidence stating that this is true… (if we find it). Then BAM, dems are left out to dry, and look terrible and will lose many points in the polls and that is what Clinton reads. I seriously doubt Clinton has had an awakening and has sees the light. Don’t get too excited.

Clinton is also famous for tailoring his message and his opinions to fit the audience.

RE: Mr. Former President: Thanks.

In that regard, he sounds just like a Republican. Or a Libertarian. Or a Green. Or a Socialist. Or a Democrat. In other words, he’s a politician just like all the other politicians. They all play the same games. Both sides are just as bad.
At least he had nice things to say when he didn’t have to, when he could have used the opportunity to “get back” at those who pulled the same stunts against him. Give the guy his cred. It’s due.
