asisaid Challenge Returns: Predestination

By Tim Butler | Posted at 23:10

Let's try the asisaid Challenge again. To refresh y'all on the rules, it's pretty simple. Identify the answer to the question in the comments, each question throughout the Challenge will have an assigned point value. The first person to hit 100 pts. will get a $5 gift certificate or a free year registration of a domain name (e.g., worth $15. You are on your honor not to Google or otherwise use electronic search tools to find the answers. See the full rules below the fold.

QUESTION. Identify the author of the following quote (10pts).

“Reprobation differs in its causality from predestination. This latter is the cause both of what is expected in the future life by the predestined—namely, glory—and of what is received in this life—namely, grace. Reprobation, however, is not the cause of what is in the present—namely, sin; but it is the cause of abandonment by God. It is the cause, however, of what is assigned in the future—namely, eternal punishment. But guilt proceeds from the free-will of the person who is reprobated and deserted by grace. In this way, the word of the prophet is true—namely, 'Destruction is thy own, O Israel.'”

The Rules of the Challenge
You are on your honor not to Google or otherwise use electronic search tools to find the answers. The points will only be awarded to (a) regular commenters on asisaid or (b) people I know well via other means. I reserve the right to determine what these two categories mean and further reserve the right to disqualify any participant at any time for any reason. Call it unconditional election, if you wish and think that isn't potentially presumptuous coming from a mere mortal.

There is no guarantee of prize value or receipt and no purchase necessary to receive it. The prizes have no cash value and will be awarded at the sole discretion of Timothy R. Butler. I reserve the right to end the Challenge at any time. Domain registration, if chosen, will be provided through Universal Networks and its registrar affiliate. Void where prohibited. You must be of legal age, typically 18 years old, to participate in this challenge for a prize. All ages and locales are welcome to participate “just for fun.”

Re: asisaid Challenge Returns: Predestination

Puh leez! Thomas Aquinas in Summa Theologica. Question 23, Article 3.

Actually, I'd never have known this one if I had not recently been reading up on the subjects of election, predestination etc. I got into Aquinas a bit during College philosophy many moons ago, but forgot about him. Just recently I came into a copy of Summa Theologica and was reminded of the gold mine that is good ole' Tom.

No comment on the answer just yet to give others a chance to enter the Challenge… but as to Thomas himself, I'll agree — “good ole' Tom” indeed! :-)
