And So It Beings. Again.
Posted by Tim at 22:2:48

Tomorrow I have my first class of my second normal semester at CTS. The class tomorrow is “Preparation and Delivery of Sermons” (a.k.a. “Prep and Del”). I’m rather excited about the course, for it will be my first opportunity to be in a class taught by the seminary’s president, Dr. Bryan Chapell (we will read his book, Christ Centered Preaching as part of the course). This should be interesting!

The rest of my classes are on Wednesdays and Fridays, so I shall post more on them later.

Re: And So It Beings. Again.

I look back on my pastoral ministry classes in college three decades later, and the numerous preaching seminars required of ministerial students there at Oklahoma Baptist University. Yes, I did learn a few things, but I remember precious little of it. Rather, I learned most from simply watching men who knew how to deliver.

While I might claim to get rave reviews from those who sit under my teaching and preaching, I have no way to prove that. But I find in the long run such training is something you use until you find your own way. Nowadays, I use precious little of the “prep” training because my brain doesn’t work that way. The very best teachers and preachers break a lot of rules, because they are delivering themselves, not simply a message.

They basically admit as much. As I understand it, Covenant’s curriculum gives you a framework in the early courses and then aims to help you vary from it in later courses. It’s not unlike how one does with almost anything similar, I suppose — writing, for example— you learn the rules so you can appreciate what it means when you break them.
