The Little Black Box
Posted by Tim at 21:21:37

I have in my possession one of the most coveted items of the year, and certainly the most talked about of this day. Yes, that would be an iPhone. In Apple’s usual style of quiet elegance, the box sits there revealing little (as if there was much that has not already been revealed through months of slow leaks of rumors). It is nearly begging me to open it, much like its call beckoned me into the AT&T Mobility store earlier this evening despite my better judgment. I have it, but do I open it? Read my musings on Open for Business.

Re: The Little Black Box

Well…I am interested in the iPhone. I would love to have one. But I cannot afford one. Nor can I, currently, justify one. Part of it is the terrible mobile reception we have up here in the mountains. Part of it - most of it - is the price tag. Even if I could afford it, that’s just way to too much. Even for something as cool as an iPhone. I would love to have one, and maybe one day I will. But for now I wish you the best with yours.

Re: The Little Black Box

Kinda slick! I like it! I’ve seen the ads on my new 37 inch LCD TV. However, my TV only cost a hundred bucks more than the phone! Most likely, the price will drop.

Data on a cell phone is a tricky critter. My cell service (ATT) requires a dataplan for a Blackberry, etc., which is an additional 30 bucks. However, for a smartphone, they have a cheaper service for ten bucks, or so. Maybe that’s why Apple chose a slower 2nd generation network?

At any rate, I’m waiting for another toy - Palm Foleo. My wife wants it to write a book, and check occasional e-mail.

“one of the most coveted items of the year”

Oh that must be to see their loved ones return home unharmed from Iraq.

Just remember you “paid” for that wonderful packaging.

BTW, when did anyone start caring about packaging? Give me a box filled with a bunch of bubble wrap anyday. The product is safe and the manufacturer can put more effort into the actual product. It takes all I can not to laugh out loud when I see blog entries showing “the unboxing” of products. Pathetic. Showing me, for example, what a micro-itx mobo looks like next to a coke for scale, totally understand. Showing how the cables are neatly tucked into their own specific spot in the box. Lame.

Once again proving the marketing power of apple and also proving how I just don’t get it.

Re: The Little Black Box

jason, youare certainly right about the price… I’m still trying to justify it myself.

Mike,it is pretty slick… More on it tomorrow.

Mark, you missed the point of my article. Packaging is neat, but not that important, as you say.

Re: The Little Black Box

Yeah, you missed it Mark.

Timothy, I look forward to your thoughts on the device.

Re: The Little Black Box

Christopher, I’m hoping to get a review up in the next few days. I need to try out some more voice usage first. I’d pretty much echo the other reviewers so far, though: it is not perfect (but there’s a catch to that remark I’ll clarify in the article), but it’s unlike any phone I’ve used before — I’m amazed by it.
