Opening the Open Door

So, as I predicted, I broke down and purchased Evanescence's new CD, the Open Door. I was doing some Christmas shopping on Amazon.com, and they had new releases for $7.99 -- how could I resist?

So far I like it. In an odd way, it seems more upbeat than their previous works (relatively speaking, as you will understand if you know Evanescence). I decided not to listen to the whole CD in one sitting, so listened to the first four songs. I had already heard "Call Me When You're Sober" on XM Flight 26, right after the single for it came out in August or September, so there weren't any surprises there, but the songs around it were very well developed. Like Fallen, the CD has a very connected, polished sound that avoids the feeling that certain key songs were meant for single status and everything else was left in rough form.

Thanks, Christopher! I figured it was time to do something like that.

Re: Opening the Open Door

I really love the band Evanescence, and I really like their new CD. However, I will take their older CDs over The Open Door. Origin is their best CD so far, although Fallen was excellent as well. I also have their EP and the Sound Asleep EP. How do you mean “upbeat”? Certainly not the lyrics, as the lyrics this time around are much darker from what I can get out of it. Take the song “Like You”. It sounds like she wants to go jump in a grave with someone. “I long to be like you lie cold in the ground like you there’s room inside for two and I’m not grieving for you I’m coming for you” That’s kinda creepy. Other than that, I usually really like their lyrics. And I always like their sound. However, “Call Me When You’re Sober” doesn’t really sound like them at all.

Re: Opening the Open Door

I’m not sure — maybe it was just the mood I was in, but I felt it wasn’t quite as depressing (using that term in a positive sense, though) as Fallen. But, indeed, “Like You” is creepy. You are right that the sound and most of the lyrics are quite good.

I’ve never heard Origin. I think it is pretty hard to obtain, isn’t it?

At first, I didn’t realize “Call Me” was Evanescence — it does have a different, but enjoyable enough sound…
